Enrol and start studying any time you like. If you study full-time, you may graduate after only twelve months, but basically it is up to you, how many terms you’d like to spend on the programme. No attendance at university required at all. And you may even take your exams online.

Individual support

Studying online doesn’t mean studying all by yourself: You will be in regular contact with our team and the supervisor of your master’s thesis and you will meet fellow students and lecturers in optional online tutorials or live webinars. That’s what we call the eLAC method.

Accredited master

The degree Master of Arts is worth 60 credit points (ECTS) and will be awarded by the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland in Austria. A theoretical, scientific approach comes along with a high practical relevance of the course’s contents.

Online master Cross-media Marketing: Contents and master’s thesis

The master’s programme Cross-media Marketing Communication is structured along three stages with 15 modules all in all, ranging, e.g., from the basics of marketing and public relations, various instruments and campaigning up to ethics for the communication industry and current trends in marketing with a glance at what might be state-of-the art in the near future.

In level 1 you will complete three modules with general marketing and communication contents. In this level, you will also find the module Scientific Work and Empirical Social Research. This is a module, in which we introduce you to literature-based and evidence-based work and thus lay a good foundation for the work that is to be done in subsequent modules.

In stage 2 we deal with the everyday practice of cross-media marketing communication. This includes working with text, images and video, as well as event communication, integrated communication, public relations and the practical field of marketing communication in general. In the communication campaigns and concepts module, you have a choice of telelearning units under the guidance of a trainer that lets you create your own cross-media communication concept. A task, that can also serve you as showpiece for job applications.

In the third level, we place a strong focus on the future. We separate image-oriented from sales-oriented marketing communication to bring them together again in a cross-media approach reflecting the trends of marketing communication. Reputation and crisis communication as high art of communication professionals, as well as law and ethics for the communications industry pave the way for you to become a senior consultant.

The seminar for the master’s thesis is assigned to level 3, because at this point you should already have completed some modules to choose a suitable topic. In principle, however, you are free to decide when you want to start this seminar: The only thing you need is an exposé to present to your tutor.

The tuition covers 24 months of study (four semesters, thus twice the minimum period of study). Additional costs of 290,- € are incurred for each additional semester. An interruption of studies due to important personal reasons is possible to a limited extent.

Assignments and graduation

You will complete 14 of the 15 modules in this programme with a written assignment: approximately 15 pages dedicated to special tasks, combining theory and practice. An exception is the module „Law“ which you complete with an online test.

Within each module you test your knowledge continuously by means of integrated self-tests. You must complete these positively before you can submit the module tasks.

Finally, you will complete your studies by writing your master’s thesis, which you will present and defend to a small board of examiners. You can do this either on-site at the university or online in a video-call.

The successful graduates of the MA Cross-media Marketing Communication master’s course are awarded the academic degree „Master of Arts in Cross-media Marketing Communication“ (abbreviated to „MA“ or „M.A.“) by the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland.

Anria Brandstätter

Mag. (FH) Anria Brandstätter, MA is the course and office manager at eLearning Academy. She holds two master’s degrees in marketing communications.

Anria is advisor to interested parties and, as programme manager, is the first point of contact for all student issues.

Silvia Ettl-Huber, wissenschaftliche Leiterin im Fernstudium "Crossmediale Marketingkommunikation"

Prof. (FH) Dr. Silvia Ettl-Huber is co-founder of the eLearning Academy for Communication and teaches Scientific Writing and Methods of Empirical Social Research and Storytelling in the Cross-media Marketing Communication Master´s Programme. She is also vice rector for research and innovation and head of the department of business studies at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland. Before that, she led the International Journalism Centre at the Danube University Krems with programmes in journalism, PR, communication and management for ten years.

Prof. (FH) Dr. Michael Roither is co-founder and managing director of the eLearning Academy for Communication and teaches Basics of Communication, Crisis Communication and Reputation Management as well as Ethics in the master’s programme Cross-media Marketing Communication. He is also head of the information|media|communication master course and vice rector for international affairs at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland. Prior to this, he has been head of the Center for journalism and communication management at the Danube University Krems for six years and served as deputy head of its superordinate department.

Admission requirements

To enrol to the course you will need either of the following:

  • an internationally recognised domestic or foreign academic degree from a university (at least equivalent to a bachelor’s degree)


  • an equivalent qualification* to be determined by the programme manager based on a university entrance qualification and at least five years‘ professional experience,
    completion of an expert course/diploma course (e.g. university course, course for further education at a university of applied sciences or course of university character) to the extent of at least 60 ECTS and at least three years of professional experience
    completion of a standardised written entrance examination, at least five years of professional experience and a minimum age of 21 years.
    * Assessment based on the descriptors describing level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF)

In 2016, the eLearning Academy for Communication was founded by Prof. (FH) Dr. Silvia Ettl-Huber and Prof. (FH) Dr. Michael Roither, both professors at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, having decades of experience in part-time education and training. They devised the so called eLearning Academy’s method for successful distance learning and started the first online master programm, the german version of this very master course „Cross-media Marketing Communication“. The eLearning Academy has close institutional ties with the Austrian Institute of Management (AIM): it is the operative arm that conducts the courses in communication, marketing and media.

The Austrian Institute of Management (AIM) at the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Burgenland  is the supporting institution for the Master’s programmes offered by the eLearning Academy for Communication. A mid-sized university of applied sciences, the UAS Burgenland, is located close to the well-known Lake Neusiedl near Vienna. 70 % of the face-to-face programmes at the UAS Burgenland are part-time and feature a high proportion of online courses. Online teaching is thus anchored in the DNA of the UAS Burgenland and has grown into full-fledged online programmes in its subsidiary, the AIM. The AIM specialises in online, practice-oriented and part-time academic continuing education and has almost 2,000 active students. It is responsible for the quality control of the courses offered under its guidance and acts as observer of examination boards.
